I have discovered crotcheting over the last couple of years, and have come across a small problem - there are many many patterns available for knitters in the shops, but I can only find crotcheting patterns online. These patterns are great, but it is hard to find the wool used in them (unless you want to pay over $10.00 per ball) - is there a good way to find out what the best alternatives are?

Also I am having a problem shifting from easy patterns for scarves etc to more advanced patterns for other clothing - does anyone have any idea the best way to advance my abilities?

    • Hey DemonChild,

A lot of us here at Spotlight crochet too. It's a great hobby, but a very addictive one!

Some patterns do call for expensive yarn - and a lot of balls of expensive yarn too. If you wanted to substitute yarn, remember to stick to the same weight. For example, it's probably best not to substitute a 4ply baby wool in place of an 8 ply - your crochet won't turn out the same as the one pictured on the pattern.

If you really must change yarn weight (instead of just moving to a cheaper brand/colour of the same weight), remember to adjust your hook size as well!

Also, we suggest taking a more gradual route from beginner to advanced patterns. Work at your own speed and spend some time in the intermediate level and try a lot of different patterns and techniques to get your skill set up and ready for the more advanced crochets!

We hope this helps! If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask :)

    • I've just recently taught myself how to crochet and I found youtube to be really helpful, watching someone doing the stiches and talking you through is a great help. I've also found a great book at spotlight called cute little animals with patterns for toys that taught me some new techniques

Also you can use any yarn, just pick one with the same ply and do a test swatch to check you still get the gauge specified in the pattern. If it's not right change the size of your hook till you get it, and if you don't finish of the swatch end you can pull it out and reuse the yarn at the start of the project.

    • Add your comment here...Hi! I have just joined this group so I am probably too late to help!
Try Google for free crochet tutorials, free crochet patterns and for the answer to almost any problem you you might come across. I have been blown away with the amount of information that I have been able to access online. Not so many trips to the Library or purchasing of expensive books when sometimes it is only one pattern that you want!
