- Materials
- • 40cm x 80cm fabric for front & back of chair pad
• 7cm x 122cm strip of fabric for side of chair pad
• 160cm x 23mm grosgrain ribbon or cotton tape
• 20cm x 20mm wide sew-in Velcro
• 38cm diameter round cushion pad - 5mm high
• sewing machine
• sewing thread
• hand needle
• scissors
• tape measure/ruler
• pins
• iron - Step 1
- Match the centre of length of ribbon (or tape) to centre of fabric strip. Pin ribbon to middle of the strip for 40cm on each side of centre (80cm of ribbon pinned to strip).
Topstitch the 80cm ribbon to fabric strip, sewing 1mm from edge of ribbon. With right sides together, sew the two short ends of fabric strip together with a 1.5cm seam allowance. Press open seam.
- Step 2
- Cut 2 x 40cm diameter circles from fabric. With right side together, pin one of the longer sides of the fabric strip to the edge of one of the fabric circles. Sew in place with a 1cm seam allowance.
Sew the other longer side of the fabric strip to the edges of the other fabric circle, leaving 15cm unstitched for turning out and inserting foam pad.
Clip all seams, turn right side out and press.
- Step 3
- Insert foam pad and hand sew opening closed. Press one of the loose ends of ribbon under 1cm. Then press the other end of ribbon under 1cm in the opposite direction.
Cut Velcro into 2 x 10cm strips. Pin end Velcro strips onto ends of ribbon enclosing the folded ends.
Before sewing in place, place chair pad on chair and check where ribbon fastens around back of chair. If ribbon is too long, or Velcro is in the wrong place, adjust to fit.
Sew Velcro in place on ribbon.
- Handy Hint
- Use a ready-made chair pad and just add the ribbon and velcro. For extra comfort, use a chair pad with a back.
