- Materials
- • make a skirt or use a ready-made skirt
• 20cm ea of 2 co-ordinating fabrics
• 2 buttons to match fabrics
• matching Gutermann thread
• scissors
• pins, hand needle
• sewing machine - Step 1
- For the centre spiral tear or cut 5 x 3.5cm strips across the width of one of the fabrics. From the second fabric tear or cut 5 x 4cm strips across the width for the outer spiral.
- Step 2
- Remove selvedges and join the 3.5cm strips into one long strip, press seams open. Machine sew a long running stitch down the centre of the strip. Gather to desired fullness. Repeat using the 4cm strips.
- Step 3
- With the skirt on a flat surface and starting off-centre arrange the gathered strip for the centre spiral. Start the outer spiral at the end of the centre spiral. When desired look is achieved pin gathered spirals in position. Baste in place before sewing. Machine or hand stitch spirals in place by sewing down the centre of the spirals over the running stitch. When stitching, make sure to stitch only through the top layer of the skirt and not to catch in the back. Sew one button to the start of the centre spiral and one to the end of the outer spiral.

- Handy Hint
- Use a brooch, crocheted flower or another embellishment on your skirt instead of buttons.
