• 0.5m each of 4 different floral fabrics
• 1.6m white homespun
• 1.5m bright pink homespun
• 1.5m black homespun

• tailors wash-out pen
• rotary cutter, mat and quilters rulers
• quilting pins, tape measure
• scissors, seam ripper

Step 1
Cutting
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

From each of the four floral fabrics cut:
• 1 x 4 7/8” strip, crosscut into 8 x 4 7/8” squares (32 squares in total).
• 2 x 2 1/2” strips, crosscut into 16, 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles (64 rectangles in total).
• 2 x 2 1/2” strips, crosscut into 16, 2 1/2” x 9” rectangles. Join together on the bias to make one continuous strip (inside border).

From white homespun cut:
• 4 x 4 7/8” strips, crosscut into 32 x 4 7/8” squares. Draw a diagonal line on the reverse of each using tailors pen.
• 8 x 2 1/2” strips, crosscut into 64, 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles.
• 3 x 4 1/2” strips, crosscut into
16 x 4 1/2” squares.

From bright pink and black homespun cut:
• 16 x 1 1/2” strips. Join strips (one pink & one black) together lengthways, press and crosscut into 40, 2 1/2” x 12 1/2” strips. From remaining strips cut 50 x 1 1/2” pieces, join together in pairs to make 25 x 2 1/2” 4-patch blocks (for sashing & cornerstones).

From bright pink homespun cut:
• 8 x 4 1/2” strips, join together in pairs to make 4 longer strips (outside border).

From black homespun cut:
• 8 x 2 1/2” strips, join on the diagonal to make one long strip (binding).
Step 2
Blocks
Half-square triangles units
Pin a white homespun square to a floral square RST - sew a 1/4” seam on each side of drawn line then cut on the line and press. Repeat for all 16 floral squares (64 in total).

Block units
Sew a floral 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangle to the side of a white homespun 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangle and press. Repeat for each floral fabric (64 in total).

Arrange a 4 1/2” white homespun square, 4 half-square triangle units and 4 block units (of the same floral fabric) as shown. Sew the units together in rows, then sew the rows together to form the blocks (16 in total).
Step 3
Sashing & cornerstones
Join blocks together with sashing and cornerstones, alternating the sashing with each block (refer to photo for block position). Press.

Note
Did you know?

Students of quilting will know that the names of traditional quilt styles tend to relate directly to the lives of the women who first began making them. Farm life influenced the names of many quilts. The Churn name (above) comes from this source as do names such as Barn Door, Shoo Fly, Anvil, Broken Wheel and Rail Fence.
