- Materials
- Quilt measures: 72½” x 72½”
• 1.4m each of 8 different colours
• 2.2m background fabric
• 2m black homespun
• 2m backing fabric (240cm wide)
• 2m quilt wadding (240cm wide)
• matching Gutermann cotton thread
• rotary cutter, mat and quilters rulers
• quilting pins, tape measure
• scissors, seam ripper
• quilters pencil
• hand needle
• sewing machine with ¼” foot and walking foot - Step 1
- Cutting
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated. - Step 2
- From each of the eight colours
• cut 6 x 6½” strips, crosscut into 3½” x 6½” rectangles - 16 of each colour (flying geese).
• cut 1 x 2½” strip, crosscut into 2½” x 6½” rectangles - approx 6 of each colour (strippy border). Join together in desired order and crosscut into 1 x 58½” length, 2 x 60½” lengths and 1 x 62½” length.
From remaining fabric cut a total of nine 2½” x 2½” squares (cornerstones).
• cut 2 x 2¼” strips, crosscut into 2¼”x 20” strips (strippy binding). Join together on the bias to make one continuous strip. - Step 3
- From background fabric
• cut 22 x 3½” strips, crosscut into 256 x 3½” squares. Draw a diagonal line on the reverse of each using quilters pencil. 
- Step 4
- From black homespun:
• cut 8 x 2½”strips, crosscut into 2½” x 12½” rectangles (sashing).
• cut 5 x 2½” strips. Join together to make one continuous strip, crosscut into 2 x 54½”lengths and 2 x 58½” lengths (inner black border).
• cut 8 x 5½” strips. Join together to make one continuous strip, crosscut into 2 x 62½” lengths and 2 x 72½” lengths (outer border). - Step 5
- Flying geese
Place a 3½” background square on one end of 3½” x 8½” colour rectangle, right sides together, matching the corners and stitch along the diagonal line. Trim to a ¼” seam allowance and press seams towards background. Place a second background square on the other end of the rectangle right sides together, matching the corners and stitch along the diagonal line. Trim to a ¼” seam allowance and press seams towards background. Make 16 of each colours. 
- Step 6
- Blocks
Sew four pairs together as shown in diagram to make 16 x 12½” blocks. 
- Step 7
- Rows
Arrange the blocks into 4 rows x 4 blocks across (use photo as a guide). Join top row inserting sashing between the blocks. Press seams towards sashing. Do this for all four rows. Join remaining sashing with cornerstones between and stitch between rows. Press seams towards sashing. - Step 8
- Borders
Inner - Attach 54½” borders to opposite sides, press seams towards borders. Sew 58½” borders to remaining sides and press. Strippy - Sew 58½” border to one side and press. Sew one 60½” border to the next side and press. To the next side sew the other 60½” border and to the last side sew 62½” border. Press. Outer - Sew the 62½” borders to opposite sides. Press. Sew the 72½” borders to remaining sides. Press. - Step 9
- Finishing
Layer backing, wadding and quilt top, baste together. Quilt as desired. Join strips put aside for binding, to make a strip long enough to go around the quilt. Bind with strippy binding. Sign and date your quilt or attach a label. - Note
- All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. ¼” seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated. Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.
