Materials

YARN BEE Little Grins #147
• 4 (5-5-6-7) x 50g balls for Dress
• 1 x 50g balls each of 3 Contrast Colours (C1, C2 and C3) for Pocket of Dress.
• 6 (7-8-9-10) x 50g balls for Overalls
• A pair 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Knitting Needles or size that give correct tension/gauge.
• A yarn needle
• 2 large buttons for Dress
• 2 large buttons for Overalls

Step 1

TENSION/GAUGE
18 sts and 32 rows to 10 cms/4 ins over moss st, using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Knitting Needles.
**Note - Correct tension/gauge is essential for a successful handknit.

CREATE - Dress

Back
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 63 (65-69-71-75) sts.
1st row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st row for moss st 9 more times.
Keeping moss st correct, dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll 8th (8th-8th-10th-12th) row until 45 (47-51-53-57) sts rem.
Cont in moss st without shaping until work measures 28 (29-32-34-39) cms/11 (11½-13-13½-15½) ins from beg, working last row on WS.

Shape armholes - Keeping moss st correct, cast/bind off 2 (2-2-2-3) sts at beg of next 2 rows = 41 (43-47-49-51) sts.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll alt row until 37 (39-41-43-45) sts rem.
Cont in moss st without shaping until armhole measures 6 (6-6-6.5-6.5) cms/2 (2-2-2½-2½) ins, working last row on WS. ***

Shape neck - Next row - Moss 14 (15 15-16-16), cast/bind off next 9 (9-11-11-13) sts in moss st, moss to end.
** Cont on these 14 (15-15-16-16) sts.
Dec one st at neck edge in every foll alt row until 9 sts rem.
Work 9 rows moss st.
Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark beg of shoulder strap.
Work a further 10 rows moss st.
Cast off in moss st. **
With WS facing, join yarn to rem sts.
Rep from ** to **.

Step 2

Front
Work as for Back to ***.

Shape neck - Next row - Moss 14 (15-15-16-16), cast/bind off next 9 (9-11-11-13) sts in moss st, moss to end.
**** Cont on these 14 (15-15-16-16) sts.
Dec one st at neck edge in every foll alt row until 9 sts rem.
Work 4 rows moss st.
Next row - Moss 3, cast/bind off 3 sts in moss st, moss 3.
Next row - Moss 3, turn, cast on 3 sts, turn, moss 3 = buttonhole.
Work 4 rows moss st.
Cast/bind off in moss st.

With WS facing, join yarn to rem sts.
Rep from ** to **.

Step 3

Pocket Base
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles and C1, cast on 3 sts.

1st row - K1, P1, K1.
2nd row - K1, P1, K1.
3rd row - Inc in first st, P1, inc in last st = 5 sts.
4th row - (P1, K1) twice, P1.

Keeping moss st correct and working extra sts into moss st, inc one st at each end of next row and foll alt row = 9 sts.
Contiin moss st, inc one st at each end of 2nd row, then in every foll 4th row 4 times = 19 sts.
Work 7 rows moss st without shaping.
Keeping moss st correct, dec one st at each end of next 2 rows = 15 sts.
Cast/bind off.

Step 4

Pocket Top
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles and C2, cast on 15 sts.

1st row - Inc in first st, knit to last st, inc in last st = 17 sts.
2nd row - Inc in first st, purl to last st, inc in last st = 19 sts.
3rd row - Inc in first st, knit to last st, inc in last st = 21 sts.
4th row - Purl.
5th row - As 3rd row = 23 sts.
6th row - Purl.
7th row - Knit.

Shape petals - Next row - Inc in first st K4, turn.
Next row - P2tog, purl to end.
Rep last 2 rows twice.
Next row - K3, K2tog.
Next row - P2tog, P2.
Next row - K1, K2tog.
Cast/bind off purlways.

Middle petals - ** With RS facing, join yarn to rem sts, K6, turn.
Work 5 rows stocking st (beg with a a purl row) on these 6 sts.
Next row - K2tog, K2, K2tog = 4 sts.
Next row - (P2tog) twice = 2 sts.
Next row - K2tog. Fasten off. **
Rep from ** to ** once.

Last petal - With RS facing, join yarn to rem 6 sts, K2tog, knit to end.
Next row - Purl.
Next row - K2tog, knit to last st, inc in
last st.
Next row - Purl to last 2 sts, P2tog.
Next row - K2tog, K2.
Next row - Purl.
Next row - K2tog, K1. Cast/bind off purlways.

Step 5

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS.
Using yarn needle, darn in ends.

Dress - Using yarn needle and mattress st seam, join side seams.
Fold back shoulder straps at coloured threads and sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes on front.

Pocket - Oversew pocket top to pocket base around outer edge, then slip stitch in place along top of base leaving petals of top free.
Using C3, embroider french knots randomly over pocket base.
Slip stitch pocket to garment front, leaving top edge open.
Make a short twisted cord out of C2 and secure to top of pocket to make stem.

Step 6

CREATE - Overalls

Back - First Leg (beg at ankle)
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 13 (15-15-15-17) sts.

1st row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st row for moss st and working extra sts into moss st, inc one st at end (inside edge) in foll 2nd row, then in every foll 4th row until there are 25 (27-27-29-31) sts.
Cont in moss st without shaping until work measures 17 (19-21-23-25) cms/7 (7½-8½-9-10) ins from beg, working last row on WS.
Break off yarn.
Leave sts on a spare needle.

Second Leg (beg at ankle)
Using 4.50mm (US 7), (UK 7) Needles, cast on 13 (15-15-15-17) sts.

1st row - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st row for moss st and working extra sts into moss st, inc one st at beg (inside edge) in 2nd row, then in every foll 4th row until there are 25 (27-27-29-31) sts.
Cont in moss st without shaping until work measures 17 (19-21-23-25) cms/7 (7½-8½-9-10) ins from beg, working last row on WS.
Break off yarn.
Leave sts on needle.

Shape crotch - With RS facing, moss across sts from first leg spare needle, turn, cast on 3 sts, turn, then moss across second leg sts = 53 (57-57-61-65) sts.
Work 7 rows moss st.
Dec one st at each end of next row, then in every foll 12th (12th-12th-10th-10th) row until 45 (47-51-53-57) sts rem.
Cont in moss st without shaping until work measures 25 (26-30-32-35) cms/10 (10½-12-13-14) ins from cast on for crotch, working last row on WS **.

Shape armholes and neck - Complete as for Back of Dress.

Step 7

Front
Work as for Back of Overalls to **. Shape armholes and neck - Complete as for Front of Dress.

Step 8

FINISHING

DO NOT PRESS.
Using yarn needle, darn in ends.

Using yarn needle and mattress st seam, join inside leg and side seams.
Fold back shoulder straps at coloured threads and sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes on front.
