Materials
• wooden coaster
• 2B pencil
• mini mosaic glass - pink
• glass tiles - yellow, brown, blue, light blue & white
• glass cutter (nibbler)
• mosaic adhesive
• white grout
• old kitchen sponge
• paint - blue
• paint brush
Step 1
Using a 2B pencil draw the design to fit on the surface you are using. To cut the pink mini tiles into round blossom petals, start with a square of glass the same size as the finished circle and cut the corners off the square, this forms a rough circle. Neaten the round shape by making small cuts (nibbles) with the glass cutters, until you are happy with the shape. Glue the pink petals in position.
Step 2
Cut and glue the yellow glass tiles in the centre of each blossom, the brown tiles over the branch, white tiles for the snow on Mount Fuji and blue tiles over the mountain. Finish by positioning the light blue glass tiles over the background and glue in place. Leave the glue to dry a minimum of one hour before grouting the design, as wet glue may reactivate and the mosaic pieces come loose.
Step 3
Mix the grout powder and water in a disposable cup until it is the consistency of toothpaste. Add blue acrylic paint to the white grout mix until it is the desired colour. Wipe grout over the mosaic filling all of the gaps between the pieces. Leave to harden off for ½ an hour then wipe off the excess using a damp (almost dry) sponge.
