Project

Doily décor - pink rectangle cushion

By Spotlight

Recycle grandma’s doilies with ready-made or handmade cushion covers.
Final Result
Materials
• two 34cm x 48cm rectangles of pink cotton fabric
• 30cm x 45cm rectangle crochet lace doily
• pink & white Gütermann sewing thread
• 40cm pink zipper
• 46cm x 46cm cushion insert
• hand needle
• scissors
• pins
• sewing machine with zipper foot
• iron
Step 1
With right sides facing sew pink fabric rectangles together using a 1.5cm seam allowance, leaving a 40cm opening on one of the longer sides.
Step 2
Clip corners and turn right side out, press seams.
Step 3
Insert zipper within the 40cm opening and sew in place.
Step 4
Leave cover unzipped and lay flat. Centre doily on the front of the cushion cover.
Step 5
Pin doily securely in place on front of cushion cover only, making sure the back of the cover is not pinned.
Step 6
Beginning in the centre of doily, hand sew to front of cushion cover, working around to outer edges.
Step 7
Cut along one side the 46cm cushion insert, so it measures 46cm x 30cm. Re-sew the side of cushion insert by overlocking or zigzagging together.
Step 8
Place cushion insert into cover and zip closed.
Handy Hint
• Dye doilies different colours using fabric dye.
• If you don’t have any old doilies try the op shop, crochet your own or buy ready-made ones.
