Festive felt

Introduce a contemporary feel to your Christmas decorations this year.
Final Result
Materials
• 20cm felt in pink, fuchsia, lime, green & brown
• ribbons & buttons in same co-ordinating colours
• matching sewing threads
• hobby fill
• hand needle
• scissors
• pins
• chopstick or pencil
• ruler/tape measure
• sewing machine
• zipper foot (optional - if buttons are sewn too close to edges)

optional: Use felt squares instead of felt by the metre.
Step 1
Gingerbread man
Cut 2 gingerbread man shapes from brown felt. Sew three buttons to the front of one using a contrasting thread on each of the buttons. Cut an 18cm length of hot pink/fuchsia ribbon. Pin both felt shapes together, right sides facing out, loop ribbon and insert ends at the top of the head. Sew together 5mm from edge using fuchsia coloured thread, leaving 5cm open down the side of one leg. Gently stuff shape, using a chopstick to get stuffing into arms and legs then topstitch opening closed.
Step 2
Christmas tree
Cut 2 tree shapes from green felt and one tree trunk from brown felt. Sew assorted buttons to the front of one tree shape using a contrasting thread on each button. Cut an 18cm length of brown ribbon. Pin both tree shapes together, right sides facing out, loop ribbon and insert ends at the top of the tree. Sew the sides of trees together using lime thread 5mm from edge, leaving base of tree open. Gently stuff shape, insert tree trunk shape into base of tree and topstitch base of tree closed, securing tree trunk within seam.
Step 3
Star
Cut 2 star shapes from lime felt. Sew assorted buttons to the front of one using a contrasting thread on each button. Cut an 18cm length of fuchsia ribbon. Pin both star shapes together, right sides facing out, loop ribbon and insert ends at the top of the star. Sew the two star shapes together using fuchsia thread 5mm from edge, leaving 5cm open on one side of star. Gently stuff shape, using a chopstick to get stuffing into points of star and topstitch opening closed.
Step 4
Bird
Cut 2 bird shapes from fuchsia felt, one wing shape from brown felt and a small triangle from lime felt for beak. Hand stitch wing shape to front of one bird shape using lime thread. Sew a small brown button onto same side as an eye also using lime thread. Cut an 18cm length of lime ribbon. Pin both bird shapes together, right sides facing out, loop ribbon and insert ends at the top of bird’s back. Pin beak to front of bird. Sew the two bird shapes together using brown thread 5mm from edge, securing beak and leaving 5cm open on one side of bird. Gently stuff shape and topstitch opening closed.
Step 5
Heart
Cut 2 large heart shapes from pink felt and one small heart shape from brown felt. Hand stitch small heart shape to front of one large heart shape using lime thread. Sew a few buttons on top of small heart using contrasting threads. Cut an 18cm length of green ribbon. Pin both large heart shapes together, right sides facing out, loop ribbon and insert ends at the top of the heart. Sew the two heart shapes together using brown thread 5mm from edge, leaving 5cm open on one side of heart. Gently stuff shape and topstitch opening closed.
Handy Hint
Add beads and charms as well as or instead of buttons.
