Green & Gold Christmas Quilt

Christmas Quilting inspiration.
Final Result
Materials
.*Simply Christmas & Tonal Holy quilting fabric range was used in image above.

• 60cm each of 3 different cream/gold Christmas fabrics*
• 60cm each of 3 different green/gold Christmas fabrics*
• 40cm green/gold Christmas fabric (binding)
• 140cm x 175cm batting of choice
• 140cm x 175cm backing fabric
• Rotary cutter & ruler
• Cutting mat
• Gutermann 100% cotton thread - beige
• Gutermann Sulky #30 cotton thread for quilting (col 1070 gold)
• Quilting pins, tape measure
• Scissors, seam ripper
• Hand needle
• Sewing machine with ¼” foot and walking foot

*If desired use more than 3 different fabrics.

Quilt measures: 48½” x 62” (123cm x 158cm).

All fabrics should be 100% cotton, washed & pressed. ¼” seam allowance used throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Read all instructions carefully before commencing the quilt.
Step 1
Cutting

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
From each of the 3 cream/gold fabrics cut -
• 1 x 11½” strip, crosscut each into 2 x 11½” squares (6 squares); cut twice diagonally to make 24 quarter-square triangles (8 from each fabric).

• 1 x 10¾” strip, crosscut each into 2 x 10¾” squares (2 from each fabric).

From each of the 3 green/gold fabrics cut -
• 1 x 11½” strip, crosscut each into 2 x 11½” squares (6 squares); cut twice diagonally to make 24 quarter-square triangles (8 from each fabric).
• 1 x 10¾” strip, crosscut each into 2 x 10¾” squares (2 from each fabric).

From green/gold Christmas fabric cut 6 x 2¼” strips for binding.

From remaining cream/gold and green/gold Christmas fabrics cut strips 3” wide and set aside for the borders.
Step 2
QUARTER - SQUARE TRIANGLE BLOCKS

Sew together a cream/gold triangle and a green/gold triangle to make one larger triangle unit (diagram 1).

Press seam towards the green triangle. Repeat with remaining triangles for a total of 24 units.
Step 3
Sew two triangle units together aligning seams with cream opposite the cream and the green opposite the green (diagram 2).

Press seams in one direction.
Repeat to make 12 quarter-square triangle blocks.

Note: Quarter-square triangle blocks should measure 10¾”.
Step 4
QUILT TOP

Arrange the quarter-square triangle blocks and the 10¾” cream/gold and green/gold blocks in 6 rows of 4 as shown in diagram 3 or as desired.

Sew the blocks in each row together. Press seams towards the single square block.

Sew the rows together. Press seams in one direction.
Step 5
BORDERS

Sew 3” wide strips of cream/gold and green/gold Christmas fabrics together alternating cream and green (then crosscut into 4” wide border strips.

Join the strips to make borders for each side (approx 63” long).

Sew borders to each side.
Step 6
QUILTING

Layer backing, batting and quilt top together and baste. Using Gutermann Sulky #30 cotton thread (col 1070 gold) quilt through the diagonals on the single square blocks and shadow quilt inside each triangle of the quarter-square triangle blocks or quilt as desired.
Step 7
FINISHING

Join the green/gold Christmas fabric strips set aside for the binding into one long strip, press in half lengthways and bind mitering corners.

Attach a quilt label with name, date and other details.

    • this could be made into a lovely flannel lap quilt. Just the right size and the blocks are nice a big.

    • Saw this pattern at the local Spotlight over December and took it home - this is one of the Iwannamake thisquilt projects. I really like the look thereof.

      I was relieved to hear that a lot of quilters gather patterns that they hope to make someday - thought I as the only nutty one out there! Phew!
