How to - Use raw edge appliqué in art quilts

By Spotlight

This technique would most often be used for wall hangings and work that does not require washing.
Materials
• fabrics for appliqué pieces
• background fabric
• Vliesofix
• iron
• sewing machine
• darning or free-motion foot
• threads of choice
• scissors
• paper scissors
• pencil
Step 1
Draw the base shape (tree branch) onto the paper side of the Vliesofix and repeat steps 2-4 as for raw edge appliqué above.
Step 2
Freehand cut the leaves or alternatively create a template of the shape/s or draw the shapes directly onto the fabric and cut them out.
Step 3
Take a Vliesofix off cut and separate it from the backing paper. Tear into very small pieces.
Step 4
Arrange the leaves on the branch. Attach each leaf one at a time using a small piece of Vliesofix under each and press to fuse in place.
Step 5
Using threads of choice stitch as desired.
Handy Hint
This technique is great way to add movement & depth to your work.
