Materials

What you’ll need
• 25cm cotton print fabric
• 20cm contrast cotton print fabric for side panels
• HeatnBond iron-on Vinyl – matte/gloss finish
• Scissors
• Tape measure
• Matching Gütermann 100% cotton thread
• 2 x 20mm buttons
• 30cm round leather cord
• Small wooden bead
• Pinking shears
• Sewing machine
• Iron
• Vliesofix
• Baking paper
• Hand needle & strong thread

Step 1

Cut a 70cm x 22cm piece from main print and two 30cm x 14cm pieces from contrast print for side panels.

Step 2

Cover all fabric pieces with HeatnBond iron-on Vinyl following manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 3

Trim all vinyl covered pieces as follows: main fabric 68cm x 20.5cm and the two side panels 29cm x 13cm.

Step 4

Fold main fabric in half right sides together and mark at each side edge. Mark the centre of the short side at the bottom of each side panel. Match the centre points of the side panels with those on the main piece right sides facing. Pin side panels to main piece. Using a 1cm seam allowance and starting 1cm from the end sew the side panels to the main piece stopping 1cm from the end.

Step 5

Make a small cut at each corner of the base so the main piece folds smoothly up the edges of the side panels. Pin and sew together using 1cm seam allowance. Turn right side out and topstitch around all seams 3mm from the edge. Trim top edges using pinking shears.

Step 6

Cut 4 x 4cm squares of contrast fabric and join wrong sides together in pairs using vliesofix. Cover both sides of each square using HeatnBond iron-on Vinyl. Cut into circles and stitch close to edge. With a button on top of circle stitch to the centre front 12cm from top edge. Attach the other circle and button to the centre back 3cm from top edge. Tie leather cord between circle and lunch bag then thread bead onto other end of the cord and knot.
