Night Owl Quilt & Cushions

Create this decorative quilt and cushions using fabric from Spotlight.

Quilt measures: 42 1/2” x 50” (108cm x 130cm)
Cushions: 36cm square
Final Result
Materials
Fabrics are from ‘Night Owl’ range in yellow
- Night Owl cot panel
- 70cm Night Owl Leaf (includes binding)
- 50cm Night Owl All Over
- 2.4m Night Owl Floral for backing
- 120cm x 140cm Sew Easy cotton/bamboo batting
- Matching Gutermann 100% cotton thread
- Rotary cutter, mat & quilters rulers
- Quilting pins, tape measure
- Scissors, seam ripper
- Hand needle
- Iron
- Sewing machine with 1/4” foot & walking foot

Optional Cushions
- 70cm Night Owl Leaf fabric
- 2 x 36cm square cushion inserts
Step 1
Cutting:
All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.
• From leaf fabric cut 9 x 2 1/2” strips, 4 strips for inside border and 5 strips for binding; trim the selvedge from all strips.
• From all over owl fabric cut 5 x 3” strips for outer border; trim the selvedge from all strips.
Step 2
PANEL
Measure 1 1/2” from the broken orange line and trim the edge of the panel leaving a 1 1/2” yellow border.
Step 3
INSIDE BORDER
Sew one 2 1/2” leaf border strip to each side of the quilt. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. Sew remaining strips to the top and bottom of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.
Step 4
OUTSIDE BORDER
Sew a 3” all over owl fabric border strip to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric. Cut one 3” all over owl fabric border strip in half and join half to each of the remaining owl fabric border strips. Sew one of these strips to each side of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.
Step 5
BACKING
Cut floral backing fabric in half (2 x 120cm lengths). Trim selvedges and sew pieces together pressing seam open.
Step 6
QUILTING
Layer backing, batting and quilt top, baste together. Quilt around owls on the panel and in the ditch or as desired.
Step 7
BINDING
6. Join the 5 x 2 1/2” leaf binding strips to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitering corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
Step 8
CUSHIONS
for each cushion:

Cut one 40cm x 40cm square and two 25cm x 40cm pieces of fabric.
Step 9
Sew a double hem along one 40cm long edge of each of the two smaller pieces by pressing under 1cm then another 1cm.
Step 10
With front right side up place one back piece face down with raw edges aligned at top and sides and hemmed edge across the centre. Place remaining back piece face down on top aligning raw edges at bottom and sides with centre edge overlapping. Pin then sew together on all four sides using 2cm seam allowance.
Step 11
Trim corners; turn through to right side and press. Place insert into cushion cover with back edges overlapping.
