Step 1
CUTTING
• From each of 5 different red prints cut 1 x 37/8” strip, crosscut into 10 x 37/8” squares, cut once diagonally to make 20 half-square triangles (100 half-square triangles in total).
Keep the 20 triangles of each fabric together.

• From each of 5 different white prints cut 1 x 37/8” strip, crosscut into 10 x 37/8” squares, cut once diagonally to make 20 half-square triangles (100 half-square triangles in total). Keep the 20 triangles of each fabric together.

• From white homespun cut 10 x 2” strips, crosscut into 60 x 6 1/2” sashing strips.

• From red homespun cut 2 x 2” strips, crosscut into 36 x 2” cornerstone squares; 10 x 2 1/2” strips, 5 for binding, 5 for border.
Step 2
QUILT TOP

Arrange the 20 triangles of each red print with the 20 triangles of a white print, e.g. red with white trees – white with red stars. Sew together these 20 red and white triangles to create 20 half-square triangle units. Keep these units together. Repeat until you have 5 sets of 20 half-square triangle units.
Note – chain piecing will make this step quicker.
Step 3
Refer to diagram 1 to arrange half-square triangle units into blocks.

Stitch units together in pairs then stitch the pairs together to create a block. Make 5 blocks from each of the 5 sets of half-square triangle units for a total of 25 blocks.
Step 4
Lay out the blocks, sashing and cornerstones
(refer to quilt image).
Step 5
Sew sashing to sides of blocks to join blocks into rows and press. Sew cornerstones to remaining sashing and stitch to top and bottom edges of rows 1, 3 and 5 then stitch rows 2 and 4 in place.
Step 6
Trim selvages from the 2½” red border strips and sew one strip to each side of the quilt. Press seams towards border and trim off any excess fabric.
Cut one of the remaining border strips in half and join half to one end of the other 2 full strips. Sew these to the top and bottom of the quilt, press and trim off any excess fabric.
Step 7
Layer backing, batting and quilt top, baste together.
Quilt as desired. Join the 5 x 2 1/2” binding strips to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind mitring corners. Attach a label or sign and date your quilt.
