Step 1
From each of the five green/gold Christmas fabrics cut 3- 5 x 15cm squares for a total of 21 squares.
Make 21 yo-yos using the extra large Clover quick yo-yo maker and the green thread. Set aside. - Step 2
- From each of the three red/gold Christmas fabrics cut 3 x 12cm squares for a total of nine squares.
Make nine yo-yos using the large Clover quick yo-yo maker and the red thread. Set aside. - Step 3
- Cut two pieces of cream homespun 22” x 26” (56cm x 66cm) and one piece of cotton batting the same size.
Sandwich the batting between the two pieces of homespun and pin to secure. - Step 4
- Set the sewing machine to a long stitch (or use a walking foot if preferred) and using the cream Gutermann 100% cotton thread in the bobbin and the Gutermann Sulky #30 cotton thread on top, stitch the layers together in a wavy pattern across the piece or in desired pattern.
Trim edges and squares up corners. - Step 5
- From green/red/gold Christmas fabric - cut 1 x 3¼” (8.5cm) strip, crosscut into 4 x 10” (26cm) strips for hanging loops; and cut 3 x 2¼” (6cm) strips for the binding.
Join the 3 x 2¼” strips into one long strip for the binding and bind the quilt mitering the corners as you go.
Place 2 x 10” strips together right sides facing and stitch down one side stitch the end into a point (see diagram below) then stitch up the other side leaving the top edge open.
Trim points and turn through to right side and press.
Zigzag across the open end.
Repeat with remaining two 10” strips.Set aside.
- Step 6
- Arrange the green yo-yos in a triangle, mixing the fabrics in a random fashion, starting with six across the base and finishing with one at the top.
Arrange the red yo-yos in an inverted triangle, starting with four across under the base of the green triangle and finishing with two to create a flat bottom on the ‘pot’
When happy with the design pin each yo-yo in place.
Optional: To make step seven easier tack the yo-yos in position using a single strand of cream thread. - Step 7
- Using the hand needle and the red perle thread sew a red button onto each green yo-yo stitching through the yo-yo to the back of the wall hanging using the technique for sewing on a four-hole button as shown in the notes at the bottom of page.
Knot thread at the front and trim off excess.
Stitch the small green buttons onto the red yo-yos using the same technique. - Step 8
- Using the Clover bow maker and the gold satin ribbon, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to make a 5-point star with two layers.
Stitch the star above the top green yo-yo.
Make one yo-yo using the small Clover quick yo-yo maker and the 7cm square cream/gold fabric.
Stitch the yo-yo in the centre of the star bow then stitch the gold star on top of the yo-yo. - Step 9
- Fold the hanging loops from step five in half and position the point on the front 2½” (6cm) down from the top edge and 2” (5cm) in from side edge then position the other end at the back.
Pin in place.
Using the red perle thread sew a red button onto each hanging loop from the front through all layers to the back using the same technique as that used for the buttons on the yo-yos.
