INSTRUCTIONS

CUTTING

All strips are cut across the width of fabric unless otherwise stated.

  • From each of Fabrics A, B, C, D & E cut 1 x 8" strip (5 strips in total).
  • From Fabric D cut 4 x 2 1/2" strips for binding.

Step 1. Trace each of the three templates - large, medium and small onto template plastic and cut out.
Step 2. Place the large template on 8" Fabric D strip as shown in Diagram 1 and cut out 2 wedges. Flip template up the other way as in Diagram 2 for a total of 4 wedges
Step 3. Repeat step 2 using Fabric D.
Step 4. For Fabrics A and B repeat step 2 then flip the template again to cut an extra 2 wedges for a total of 6 wedges for each of these fabrics.
Step 5. For Fabrics C and E repeat step 4 then flip the template again to cut an extra 2 wedges for a total of 8 wedges for each of these fabrics. 32 wedges in total - 4 x Fabric D, 6 x Fabrics A and B, 8 x Fabrics C and E.

FANS

Step 6. Arrange 10 fabric wedges into a fan shape then repeat twice more varying the order each time,
rearrange as needed until happy with the layouts.
Note - there will be two wedges left over.
Step 7. Select one set for the large fan. With right sides facing, sew first 2 wedges together down one long side. Keeping order correct sew next five pairs together in the same manner. Repeat until all 10 wedges are sewn together. Press seams in one direction.
Step 8. Select one of the remaining sets for medium fan. Place medium template on a wedge aligning narrow end and sides, trim off wide end. Repeat for remaining nine wedges keeping order correct. Sew wedges together as in step 7 then press seams in one direction.
Step 9. Trim the wide end off wedges in remaining set using the small template. Sew wedges together as in step 7 then press seams in one direction.
Step 10. Cut 3 x 3 1/2" squares of Legacy Fuse Under and trace a 3" diameter circle onto the paper side of each. Cut 3 x 4" squares of Fabric D and fuse one Legacy Fuse Under square onto the wrong side of each Fabric D square. Cut out the circles and remove the backing paper.
Step 11. Place large fan on applique mat. Position a circle in centre of straight edge so it overlaps centre raw edges and fuse in place. Trim off excess circle from bottom edge. Repeat for medium and small fans.
Step 12. Cut backing Fabric E and batting as follows - Large 21" x 12", Medium 18" x 10", Small 16" x 9".
Step 13. Layer the backing, batting and fan together. Starting in the centre, quilt 1/4" on each side of seams from outer edge into centre, continuing stitching through the circle section to the edge. Alternatively quilt as desired.
Step 14. Trim off excess batting and backing fabric making sure the outer edge of fan has a continuous curve. Join the 4 x 2 1/2" binding strips to make one long strip. Press in half lengthwise and bind each fan mitering corners.
Step 15. To hang fans make hanging sleeves from Fabric D. Cut strips - Large 11" x 4", Medium 10" x 4", Small 9" x 4". Press short ends in 1/4" twice and topstitch. Fold strip in half lengthways with wrong sides facing and stitch, press seam open. Press tube in half with seam in centre of one half.
Step 16. Position and pin sleeve with seam against back of fan and down far enough from curved top so that dowel or sleeve will not be visible, refer to photo. Hand stitch top edge of sleeve to fan taking care not to sew though to the front. Roll lower edge up so pressed line at bottom is approx. 1/4" from base of tube and hand stitch.
Step 17.Cut dowel into 3 lengths - 11" (28cm), 10" (25cm), 9" (23cm) and put into hanging sleeves.
Step 18. Attach a label or sign and date your fans.
